Amateur Radio License Exams

We conduct FCC Amateur Radio license exam sessions in-person at Irvine Valley College and online. Sessions are open to everyone.

01 Location

Sessions are held at Irvine Valley College — 5500 Irvine Center Dr, Irvine, CA 92618. Directions and room number will be emailed to you the night before your session. Free parking is available for applicants.
02 What to Bring
- → Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, IVC-issued ID, or passport)
- → Two No. 2 pencils
- → An eraser

03 Permitted Items

A non-programmable calculator is allowed. Memory must be erased before the session begins.

// Online Exams

01 Environment

Choose a quiet, distraction-free room. No one else may be present during the exam. Examiners will ask you to show your surroundings before the session begins. Many applicants use a bathroom for this purpose.
02 Internet & Audio

A stable internet connection is required. Your device must have a working microphone and speaker.
Headsets, earbuds, and in-ear devices are not permitted. Medical hearing aids are exempt.
03 Camera

Your device must have a working camera. Either the camera or the device itself must be movable so you can show a full 360° view of your surroundings on request.
04 ID & Materials

Have a government-issued photo ID ready to present on camera. If you plan to use scratch paper or a calculator, have them ready to show as well.
Calculators must be non-programmable with erasable memory.
05 Monitors

Only one monitor may be in use during the exam. If you have multiple monitors, turn off and cover all extras with a blanket, shirt, or similar item.
06 Second Camera

In some cases, examiners may require a second camera. This can be a phone, laptop, or any other Zoom-capable device.
07 Close All Applications

Before joining Zoom, close all running programs, folders, and applications. Examiners will review your desktop and may ask you to close anything still open.
08 Screen Sharing

You will be required to share your entire desktop in Zoom. If you are unfamiliar with screen sharing, practice before your session.
